The truth about cadmium and chocolate

A recent UFC-Que Choisir article suggested that organic cocoa, particularly from Latin America, might present an increased risk due to the presence of cadmium. The wording can lead to confusion, as it implies a direct link between organic cocoa and health hazards. Let’s be clear.

What is cadmium?

Cadmium is a metal naturally present in soils, particularly in Latin America, the region of origin of our cocoa beans. So it's hardly surprising to find traces of it in our raw materials. This phenomenon is nothing new, and is governed by very strict European regulations (among the most stringent in the world).

At Grain de Sail, the safety of our chocolates is a priority. Controls are carried out on the mass of cocoa used, as well as on our finished products, to ensure that cadmium levels remain well below the legal thresholds defined by the European Union, and present no risk to our consumers.

In our approach, we give priority to cocoa fromorganic farming andagroforestry, without chemical inputs. We are convinced that moderate consumption of quality chocolate is the best approach.
